"That's it, then. That's your first-day look!"

Blush/shrug. "Well, okay then. I'm sure it'll be okay."

"Except now, we do the make up. Let me set up my stuff...." And she sets to work unpacking the laptop, a table mic, and her makeup kit on Sam's dresser.

"I don't need to do that on the first day, right?"

Sylvi blinks. "Why not?"

"I mean, no, you don't have to...but wouldn't you want to?"

"I don't think I can do it..."

A hand up. "Trust me. I'll show you, and then you can decide if you want to or not. If you do, and you mess up, catch me outside school to check and correct. Buddy system, okay?"

She bites on her lip again, but nods. "Okay..."

"Okay. Sit here." Sylvi has drawn up a chair, and she's turning on the recording program on the laptop, aiming the camera. "And look, I'm going to edit this up, and you'll get to see it before I put it up on YouTube, okay? So nothing goes up without your approval."

"And I won't put it up until after tomorrow, so nobody will see your look ahead of time. Okay, recording now, ready?"

"...thanks, Sylvi"

A pause. "And, um, thank you for last night, too..."

She smiles. "Hey...no worries. Just glad you're okay. And thanks for helping me with this." She nods at the camera. "Okay, gotta start with an intro, hang on." She pauses, takes a deep breath, lets it out, and then puts on her cheerleader smile and waves at the camera. "Hey, everybody! It's me again, Sylvi!"

She rattles on for a few seconds about previous videos and subscriber numbers and how to subscribe...it sounds like a patter that she's memorized.

A nervous smile for the camera.

"So, okay, this is one of my besties, Sam King, and she's helping me out today by playing model. She's let me make her up a couple of times, but this is the first time on camera. And we're thinking about looks for the new school year. Ugh, school, but look cute doing it, right?"

"I'm starting with the super basics...moisturizer, eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss. If you've only got five minutes and you don't really want to do make-up because of whatever, then this is still a good way to emphasize the eyes, which are always key."

Thumbs-up?

And Sylvi gets to work with the makeup. "So, do you know which English you've got this year?" she asks, completely as if the camera weren't there.

"Mr. Gadd... I've heard he likes sci-fi..."

"Hey! Me, too! What period? Oh, and just so you know, I cut a lot of this stuff out...sort of skip ahead in the process..." she explains as she finishes with the moisturizer. "So I can mostly cut out things or cover them up with sound effects. That's part of the fun." Then she turns to the camera again. "Okay, so a nice liquid eyeliner really accentuates the eyes. For first timers, it can be kind of tickly when it's drying, so don't rub! Let it dry!" A smiling scold, then she has Sam close her eyes as she applies the liner.

"Fourth...." Her eyes twitch a little under the brush.

"Oh, I've got him second. Oh, well. Here, face the camera. Okay...so you can see already the difference between with and without the eyeliner. It takes practice to do on yourself, though. Here, Sam...try on yourself. Keep your eye open, just paint really lightly, a thin line just above the lashes...."

"Oh, sucks. I hope we have at least one class together..."

A panicked look at the suggestion.

She does, however, take the wand and try

It probably smudges a little. "Good try, here..." she hands her a cosmetic wipe. "Wipe it off, then try again."

"And yeah, I hope so, too. Maybe I can get my schedule changed?"

A somber nod, and she takes her next attempt with deadly seriousness.

"Do you have gym in sixth?"

"I think so. I forget. Either sixth or fifth."

This attempt is improved. "Better. Here, let me touch up." She reclaims the wand and does so, then narrates to the camera as she moves on to mascara.

"Again, give it time to dry. It's gonna feel weird until it dries."

"Do you know Adam's schedule yet? Is he in any classes with you?"

Deer in headlights.

"Prob.. probably not? I think he's a junior..."

"Right. Yeah, he's probably got classes with Siv. Here, look this way..." More mascara.

She starts to reach up to rub her eyes, but stops herself.

"It feels sticky."

"Yeah, it's going to. Blink a couple of times, but don't squinch. It'll dry." She reaches for the lip gloss. "Okay, purse your lips, like this." Kissy face.

Kissy face!

"Now don't laugh!" Sylvi instructs, insuring attempted laughter as she applies the lip gloss.

"Oh! I'm going to be taking French this year. I figured I'd give Mr. Gardner a chance." A bit of mischief in her tone as she finishes the lip gloss. "Okay, take a look."

"Spanish, with Lupe..."

"Oh!" Surprised blink.

The effect is simple but effective. Sam's eyes really pop. "Okay, so see how just a little can do a lot? You don't have to spend, like, forty minutes on your makeup every day to make an impact. And, yeah, you don't need makeup at all," she says to the camera. "There's days I don't bother, really. But if you want to have fun with it, it's more fun if you know how." This seems to be a tag line of sorts. "Okay, so Sam, you like?"

A little blush. "Well, kinda. Yeah. It's nice."

"Yup. So, okay, Sam doesn't do makeup much, so this is what I'm suggesting she do for herself for day one of school, if she wants to. But...if I were going to be her stylist for day one? I'd do a little bit more...." and she starts narrating the foundation, concealer, blush, eye color as she goes to work.

A soft 'mmph' of surprise, but she goes with it.
