robinrahne
4:25pm
I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'm shallow.
shrug
earldebuke
4:26pm
Nah. It's cool. Different strokes.
robinrahne
4:26pm
nod
North by Northwest I enjoyed.
earldebuke
4:27pm
You know I'm not sure I ever saw that in full. Mostly I remember promotions of a guy ducking a plane.
robinrahne
4:28pm
Yup, that's the key scene. It's a good movie...and some clever subtext around Martin Landau's character.
earldebuke
4:30pm
I think if I had to trot out 'fancy classic dramas that prove I may have taste' I might have to say I really liked 12 Angry Men a lot more than I thought. One room, a group of actors, and I was actually caught up in what I might normally be bored by.
tanner
4:30pm
12 Angry Men is an amazing movie, though
tanner
4:31pm
but then I like some movies that a lot of other people seemingly have never heard of so take my opinion at your own peril
robinrahne
4:32pm
12 Angry Men is spectacular, and I often wish I could teach a class on film analysis so I could show it and talk about it.
tanner
4:32pm
examples? I loved Suicide Kings, Way of the Gun, and Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead
robinrahne
4:32pm
chuckle
Great titles.
earldebuke
4:32pm
Blushes
I have seen none of those
tanner
4:33pm
that last one won points with me just because it had the same name as a Warren Zevon song
earldebuke
4:33pm
And yes, 12 Angry men is just actors at the top of their game.
tanner
4:33pm
Kings and Denver have Chris Walken in them so they should be seen by everyone
robinrahne
4:33pm
Oh, All the President's Men goes high on my list of good movies.
tanner
4:34pm
another good one, yes
robinrahne
4:34pm
Walken freaks me out, but in a good way.
tanner
4:35pm
Suicide Kings has a brilliant cast even if you took Walken out of the equation
tanner
4:36pm
damn I can't type when I'm hyper
earldebuke
4:36pm
"the Lion in Winter" has one of my favorite exchanges "He's got a knife!" "Of course he's got a knife, we all got knives! It's 1183 and we're all barbarians"
robinrahne
4:37pm
"I know. You know I know. I know you know I know. We know that Henry knows, and Henry knows we know it. We're a knowledgeable family."
earldebuke
4:37pm
Heh
tanner
4:37pm
Geoffrey Lewis' death scene in Way of the Gun is one of the best I've ever seen
earldebuke
4:37pm
Putting the fun in medivally dysFUNctional
tanner
4:37pm
but him off of James Caan was great, too
robinrahne
4:38pm
The Way of the Gun...is that one of the samurai-story-retold-as-Western genre?
tanner
4:38pm
WotG was actually a movie that made me think "Okay. Ryan Phillipe isn't a complete waste of skin."
tanner
4:39pm
nope
tanner
4:39pm
modern crime caper
tanner
4:39pm
it might have been inspired by a samurai piece, though
tanner
4:40pm
all I know for certain is was that it was written and directed by the guy that wrote Usual Suspects
robinrahne
4:42pm
Hmmm...I'll check it out.
robinrahne
4:42pm
I'll confess, my preferred crime capers run towards the hapless bumbling gang types. Don't know if either of you have read any Donald Westlake?
earldebuke
4:43pm
I have not. But I have a friend who enjoys heists and capers. Do you recommend him ?
robinrahne
4:46pm
I really, really do, but with a caveat -- his stuff was written in the 80s, so it's full of stuff that's not politically correct in the slightest. That said, look for
Drowned Hopes
. That's the first one of his I read.
earldebuke
4:46pm
Okay. I shall.
tanner
4:47pm
I'm a big fan of Elmore Leonard, too
robinrahne
4:47pm
His books have a cast of recurring characters, so each one sometimes references events outside of its unique narrative, but not to the point where it impacts the enjoyment of the story.
robinrahne
4:47pm
Oh, what have I read by Elmore Leonard...? Sounds so familiar.
tanner
4:47pm
but WotG could easily be considered a 'crime caper gone awry' type of movie
tanner
4:48pm
Get Shorty? 3:10 To Yuma? Be Cool? Jackie Brown?
tanner
4:48pm
Leonard had a career that lasted for like 50 years or so
tanner
4:48pm
the TV show Justified was also loosely based off of his work
robinrahne
4:48pm
I must have seen something, but none of those are it. No worries.
tanner
4:49pm
Leonard's stuff is awesome but it is NOT politically correct by any stretch
earldebuke
4:51pm
By that standard, Mel Brooks isn't PC but my lord are great movies 🙂
robinrahne
4:51pm
chuckle
Yup.
tanner
4:52pm
I'm also partial to CArl Hiaasen's writing, too
tanner
4:52pm
and what I've read of Andrew Greeley I liked
