Then again, I am a great fan of Squire Womba (sp) in Ivanhoe, at least one of the movie versions "Careful sir knight, for every Jew you show me who's not a Christian, I'll show you a christian who is not a Christian" 🙂 and "A gentleman at last and me first duty is to steal a horse"

I've never actually read Ivanhoe. Tried to listen to it on a long trip, once, but the download was screwed up and we didn't get the whole thing.

I liked all the characters, and the screenplay...but even with the butterfly, the animation irritated me.

I love Rankin-Bass's stop-motion stuff, but the style just doesn't translate well to 2D, IMO. I tolerated it when The Hobbit was first released cuz, well, THE HOBBIT...but it sure wasn't my preferred vision of what it should have been.

And, as Catnik pointed out, Mia Farrow should not sing.

Oh, if you want to see the movie for Ivanhoe I think mostly of the 1952 version. It shows its age, but if you can forgive hollywooditiz of the period, it can be fun

Oh I liked their version of the hobbit... though mostly I remember the songs and Bill Biby's excellent voice acting "I couldn't argue, my contract was vague on several points" even as a kid I caught that and laughed

Again, the voice acting was spectacular, and the soundtrack was...memorable 😉 . And honestly, the animation was better done in The Hobbit than in The Last Unicorn. But I just don't like the big-noses-for-comic-relief, inconsistent face shape, etc etc etc of the animation.

And if you have the time to watch Ivanhoe I hope you enjoy it. I was surprised at how some of the side characters stole scenes. Womba and Cedric are hilarous together. A Cranky Gwydion lord and Pooka combo.

For me, my turn off animation wise tend towards the anime over exaggered emotives. I know there is cultural and historical reasons for that style, but it just takes me out of it

Oh, yes. Some anime can be quite lovely...but then you get the stress-hashtag-on-forehead, inverted-horseshoe-happy-eyes, and economy of motion while camera pans across the frame to create illusion of action....bleh.

Any visual style that reduces a character's dignity, even in moments of comedy, bugs me.

I've tried, because so many of the geek community love it, but while I enjoyed some 'japanimation' as a kid, it wasn't really for the animation.
