They'll be fine. They'll mis-spend any spending cash they have on hand, but they'll travel fine.

Ah, but this assumes either of them ever get a job to begin with. ((Sigh)) Little steps. Thing1 needs a driver's license and we have him in lessons. Thing2 has completed the online course and is waiting to hear from the instructor (on vacation). With DLs they can get to and from work. That'll make getting work easier.

Are either of them mentioning college (without being prompted)?

Well, with Thing1 graduated we've had those conversations and he's going to work a year first. Maybe take some vo-tech classes like the ones he took in HS. If he can get it together, the local comm college could serve to get those gen ed credits. After those experiences, maybe he'll know more about what he wants to do with college.

He's interested in the idea of the medical and healing arts but... the reality of it, not so much. He's going to volunteer at the VA hospital, too. Get a wee look at what's involved in that line of work.

Thing2 DID bring up college unprompted. He wants to go; "the college experience" as he put it.

So Thing2 and I have had a few conversations about really needing the grades and the extracurriculars to make an application stand out. He's going to have to work and he HATES to work.

"The college experience" is magical. Might be a rough first semester, but might also turn him on to learning.

I know a lot of college offer summer sessions designed to inspire high schoolers by giving them a week living on campus (closely supervised) and taking college-style classes with real professors.

I've seen something like that around here. We have an email out to his guidance counselor to get him lined up for an academic pathway he's interested in, and to talk about NHS and other stand-out items. A summer session would be in line with that, I'll bring it up.

It also helps because it gives him time to socialize with other college-bound students. Sometimes other people's drive can be contagious.

Sure, could be. He's interested in all of it.... or at least, the idea of it.

He's old enough to be a volunteer. Go through some of the training, etc. It might click enough for him to go pro.

That's a good idea. With both of us job hunting (me more than him....) and him without a DL (yet - should have it by the end of the summer/start of fall) we're coordinating a lot. I want to start him volunteering at the VA (it's close, I can get him there and back) and once he has his DL and that experience, see what he wants to do.

But volunteering with ER svcs is a good next step.

Lord knows the world could use more of them if he feels called
