Oh, I'm right there with you, Mr D. Of course, there have been some novels that have intimidated me, or that I've pre-determined to be "boring" -- but when I read them, I fell in love with them.

Catcher in the Rye and Price and Prejudice are two examples.

Also The Bell Jar.

Holden sucks. He's supposed to suck, but he sucks.

I actually liked Moby Dick, but that is some dry material for such a wet adventure

As much as Zara adores gothic lit, I do not. Poe is the exception.

I did really enjoy In the Heart of the Sea, which is supposedly the inspo for Moby Dick

I had to read Heart of Darkness in high school. In my mind, it took FOREVER...but when I look at it now, it's basically a short story. It's just tedious.

Silas Marner. The Pearl.

I did love my one jr high english teacher - Mr Gadd's class was the one where we hit every messed up/traumatizing short story AND The Outsiders

That was before I started butting heads with english teachers - I had awful, petty, narrow-minded ones in 10th and 11th. Mrs. Luckza tried to bar me from AP english.

See, I liked Heart of Darkness

Oh, I think I'd like Heart of Darkness better now than I did then. I was a very immature reader, emotionally. I did like The Pearl, never read Silas Marner.

But yeah 🙂 It took forever to get through that jungle

And... please, this is not bragging, but my verbal IQ was tested at 180, I scored an 800 on the verbal portion of my SAT, and got a 5 when I did take the English AP

Conrad has a shorter story called "Outpost of Progress" -- much better.

She disliked that I missed her class when I went on quiz bowl trips, and I got penalized for it - when athletes didn't, if they went to meets

She disliked that I disagreed with her analysis on certain books, and I would argue in class

I love when students argue interpretation, as long as they can back it up with text evidence.

My 12th gra AP teacher was great - he was an old hippie and liked arguing 🙂

If it's just wishful-thinking interpretation, I give 'em hell.

She marked points off on a Tale of Two Cities quiz. It asked about the outcome of Darney's trial - I said he was found not guilty.

She said I was wrong, because he was acquitted.

I argued that that was the same thing. The jury votes guilty to convict, and not guilty to acquit.
