his family is AWFUL

end of the night, old man dies and family takes off masks to find out that their faces have transformed to reflect the masks/display their grotesqueries on the surface so everyone can see how they are

It is AWFUL and I HATE IT

I don't understand why his stuff is always such a miserable slog, when, again, the story is cool and dark and exciting

I really like some of his short stories. The Birthmark is another story that's more ponderous than it needs to be.

He and Dickens were contemporaries, and they both have a good deal of slog-giness.
