I think he's met a lot of hostility and not a ton of welcome

they might not be "wrong" but they haven't been nice

I think part of the reason they don't come across as nice is Adam wants to know why he's not jsut let in. They tell him..nicely but honestly. This isn't the yes he wants so he gets more insistant. They tried nice, so now they tell him bluntly. It escalates until he forces them to be rude for him to get it
