Here, in Portland where I live now, I have been having to learn to listen to Mediterranean accents. I have a lot of trouble with those and I feel very bad asking them to point at the poster of the movie they want to see.

I like accents. 🙂 And I am well aware I have an accent.

I just wish I understood them better.

Oh yeah, The South has numerous sorts of accents

I hear that all the time. "Hi, welcome to regal, would you care to give a dollar to the stars of hope?" -fake smile- Customer. .... "No, I do not care to....." -awkward.-

Also..lots of French and British accents here.

Feygal, in some prts of appalachia, that means "Sure" so , "Would you mind loaning a dollar ..." Would be answered with "Don't care to" and then the guy hands over the dollar

And riding the street car, its not unusual to hear at least three or four different languages...

I would love that if it worked that way here!

Long story short I try to learn something new whenever I suffer a loss. Last time I was stuck in the hospital I picked up Duolingo and my friend from the Netherlands suggested I might like Dutch. It’s a very interesting language..like if German and English had a strange yet friendly baby with good tastes in beer.

Today when I got my lunch, I got Ramen, In which I used Japanese to greet and thank the vendor. (Simple stuff) And then I got a Horchata...in which I switched to Spanish to greet and thank... Then I walked away and thought... "I did not even think about it..I just did it..."

I love Duolingo. I use it a lot for Chinese and French.

I have thought about Dutch... I know a little from my grandparents but not much.

But the food cart culture in Portland, if you make an effort to greet an food cart owner in their native language, then they treat you nicer, and some give you more or free food, for the the effort. I have been trained very well.

I am trying to learn how to greet and thank in Thai.

Dutch evolved out of the same proto-Germanic soup as English and German so a lot of the vocab is similar to English in a weird way (Ik heb som water “I have some water”), but the grammar rules are more German-ish. Long shot chance it could also be handy with my line of work eventually, boss might want me to go over and source some Belgium hemp or talk to a grower in Amsterdam idk

You wanna know something interesting? ASL is actually based off French.

Where BSL the signing they use in the UK...is based off their culture/english..in away.

We have a couple deaf patients, I really wish I could help them better, but we manage via writing things down and theater level facial expressions.

So French sign language and American sign language is pretty close to each other.

Well each country delt with their deaf populations in their own way.

Deaf schools in America were spear headed by a French Minster.

Gallaudet . He also headed the first Deaf College in America...and he brought over a deaf teacher from France..to teach the students sign.

Thus... ASL was born from a French Man.
