Unless you're talking about the pope

Also women use a lot of emphasis and intensive speech. Example. "You are SO fired." Males once again are direct to the point, and simple. "Your fired."
bacchante
4:14pm
You're. (I know, but you asked me to!)
feygal
4:15pm
Also for females politeness and hyper-correct grammar. 😛
feygal
4:15pm
In both speaking and writing.
bacchante
4:15pm
I can see that. Have also heard women less speak than 'sing', inflection-wise, and that would seem to go along with that.
feygal
4:15pm
Yes, if a woman uses a direct, declarative statement. Their tones will rise.
bacchante
4:16pm
Don't know what study it was, but graphed, a man and woman saying the same sentence, the female is more likely to have ups-and-downs in her tones.
feygal
4:16pm
Making it into a sort-of-question.
bacchante
4:16pm
Making into a sort-of-question? 😉
feygal
4:17pm
This is what my test is based on by the way. LOL
bacchante
4:17pm
So, a guy will say, "You suck." A woman will say, "You SO suck?" (Okay, being silly, but.)
feygal
4:17pm
No. But a guy more than likely well just say. "You suck." But the gal will emphasis the -you-.

I found the first comment about accents and the South amusing. Because I worked at a call center and had Tourists talking about the South "Youse guys talk funny down there, y'know?" And I was chuckling because, gosh, we sure aren't alone.

4:19pm
HAH! I bet.
G
And the things you wish you could say back, I'm sure.
feygal
4:19pm
There is also a lot of vocab stuff. Like girls tend to more colors, like teal, magenta. Where men are find with blue and red.
feygal
4:19pm
-G- Our study on accents was/is interesting!
bacchante
4:20pm
So, when someone's gender and speech patterns are at odds, I am guessing there are negative repercussions? This is interesting, with female politicians having to balance directness with "She's a pushy bitch."
feygal
4:20pm
Also SLP's. Good ones. Don't think accents matter. -g- In fact many SLP's are fighting to keep dialects and accents alive, because a lot of them are based on culture and help to keep communities together.
feygal
4:21pm
Yes, there are often negative repercussions. Like we have seen with Politician. Its also why females often style switch between work and home.
catnik
4:22pm
Guys uptalk, too, but more fuss is made up women doing it
earldebuke
4:22pm
I think I heard a study that women have an edge in vision in actually telling variances in colors to guys. Guys have better vision for tracking movement. IF the theory is right, it's because women were more often gatherers as in "Gee, let's not get slightly brighter but Poisonous berries" where men were more often the hunters going "Okay.... prey is racing to the left so I need to throw the spear... THERE"... kind of neat that might have influenced our ways of reading and writing.
catnik
4:23pm
...I have Pittsburgh twang, too.
earldebuke
4:23pm
and speaking
bacchante
4:23pm
Agreed; male spatial sense tends to be better than female's, females rely on landmarks primarily (all averaged, not universal) for that reason. And BTW, only females can be tetrochromats.
earldebuke
4:24pm
Oh my trad mages HATE those guys
earldebuke
4:24pm
oh wait, wrong thing
bacchante
4:24pm
Because color vision is based partially at least on the X chromosome, a female can have a mixture of two different cones for color vision....which supports Val's statement.
bacchante
4:24pm
LOL

4:25pm
If anyone cares:

feygal
4:26pm
Something that is really interesting. Is women use their speech and grammar, to show off rank. Men use those same things to show solidarity. I thought that was interesting.
earldebuke
4:26pm
So, a little mercy ladies, when you tell your man to get the 'Deep Ocean Azure' paint for the walls, and he brings in 'Flat Sapphire blue' instead, we're not TRYING to piss you off. Show mercy 🙂
feygal
4:26pm
Giggles
bacchante
4:26pm
I would have thought it would be just the opposite, since males tend to be more hierarchal.
catnik
4:26pm
Val, you ever see "Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House"?
bacchante
4:26pm
LOL
earldebuke
4:27pm
That IS interesting... I would have thought the reverse as well

OTOH, females have mastered the high school art of verbal snubbing to an art form, so....

4:29pm
Well a study was done an a group of men in the UK. I think they were low income workers. Lots of them admitted that they knew they used the wrong sort of speech patterns. That they did not have proper "Speech" but in the end, they wanted to sound like the rest of their friends and those in their inner circle.
bacchante
4:29pm
Okay, that makes some sense.
bacchante
4:29pm
And yes, this scene is amusing!
feygal
4:30pm
Where women where interviewed in the same study, they said only un- educated people use those patterns so they wanted to speak the standard form for their location.
bacchante
4:30pm
Which, in a way, means all the women are speaking the same TOO....
