I write angst or hurt/comfort or whump when RL is really stressful or I am depressed. I know this.

I've been trying to figure it out!

Feels too talky, and exposition heavy. It's hard to wrangle 5 characters in dialogue.

Whump = oh yes, you are going to make your main character Go Through It.

Ahhhhh.

If you don't mind a little advice on the talky exposition...?

I do not object to advice!

You might want to explore starting the chapter with the next bit of action they get into, and then do a flashback to summarize the conversation(s). Grab the reader, and they'll be more willing to trust you to get through the exposition.

Example: A friend once wrote a short story that involved the main character going on a long hunt for a wounded unicorn to put it out of its misery. It was TEDIOUS. I suggested he start with coming home AFTER the hunt, with blood and stuff (I don't remember all the details), and have a conversation with the person there...and then get into a reflection on the purpose for the hunt and then the hunt itself.

The reflection being in the character's thoughts, not in dialogue.

It changed the pacing of the story enough to make it readable, at least.

I have been trying like crazy to "show" rather than "tell" how SHIELD has been putting on a campaign to get a newly-defrosted Steve to sign on with them. The bit I hate has Natasha talking explicitly about those tactics. I think it's too on the nose, and slightly OOC.

Maybe more hinting, less explicit-ing?
