I find that doing deep squats whenever I need to pick anything up actually does wonders for my back.

Well, it took me a while to work up to "deep" squats (not sure they'd count as "deep" for actual athletes).

Oh, understood. And, my knees too; Hell, I try to pick things up and my knees warn me VERY clearly when to stop that shit.
