Okay, so...this year we had three fighters in camp. However, one is a squire to a Count in the East Kingdom, and so he doesn't count as a mercenary anymore, meaning we only had two mercenary fighters to offer for hire (me and Feanor). That's not great, but okay, and Feanor is an official member of our mercenary crew (I'm like a guest fighter, due to some nonsensical interpersonal politics, but whatever).

Well, the day before negotiations for hiring are supposed to happen, Feanor takes a fall in camp and lands hard on his elbow right on top of a stick in the firewood pile. I have never heard him make such sounds of agony. So I haul his ass off to the nearest emergency room, and we spent 8 hours there. I saw the X-rays...it was a BAD break, and the next day he departed Pennsic and returned home to California.

(He's since had surgery and is much better now.)

So...there I am, not even an official member of the team, and yet I'm the ONLY mercenary we have to offer for hire.

Fortunately, our long-term allies of Preachain are happy to hire me (which also meant I was fighting on the opposite side of the non-merc fighter, which is a first for our camp -- the rule is supposed to be that everybody fights for the same side).

Anyway, I get hired, but the hiring fee is only three (high-value) items -- and there are 13 people in camp. A quandary.

Fortunately, I had brought along all my various treasures and bits and bobs that I never really have any use for, so I was able to lay out all those things from my own stores, and that covered the hiring cost of the camp. And I came away with a VERY nice Feed the Ravens cup (Catnik knows who they are, I think).

I saw a bit of that.
