In such shelter and access to trade three grand cities had arisen: Talaman, Cannover, and Degraunt. Talaman was believed by many to be the oldest, the oldest still standing anyway. Cannover disputed this, of course, smug in it's confidence as a sea power rather than 'merely' a river city. No one argued that Degraunt was the youngest of the three. It been intentionally made so a mere three centuries ago as a more neutral location to hold the center of political power and be where the High Council could meet.
The endeavor by then First Minister Degraunt had nearly fallen on it's face and likely would have if not for the building of the great school for the arcane or 'Great school of wizardry' as some called it. More than any other institution, it was the School that gave legitimacy to the youngest city as the new center of power in Nantys, politically, and litterally. Initially, it was the capital buildings of the government seat that were meant to be the center of the city, but such was the pull of the school as it grew in demand, that was meant to be something of an oval city had become a figure eight, or even an infinity symbol. The government seat dominating the eastern side of the city, and the great school the nexus of it's western half.
It had worked well for the most part. The distance had allowed at least the illusion that the school was not a political body, and there was supposed to be a certain egalitarian aspect that any noble's son, any aristocrat's daughter, might have an equal chance to excell in the study of the occult and arcane classes here. Even one of a lesser family might rise. The actual execution of this great experiment was highly flawed, and often failed, but the effort was sincere. Well, as sincere as the great houses ever could be. Politics would still infuse into everything.
