I am grumpy. I was grading essays earlier today. One student turns in work that just isn't college-level work (for the college-level class), and I try to give her specific constructive criticism. She emails me in a pissy fit about how I'm picking on her and nothing's good enough for me and how I have favorites because other kids got better grades and she knows her paper is just as good as theirs (it isn't).

Yeah, I know she's being a brat, and I know I graded that paper fairly (I use a rubric), but she got in my head.

She wouldn't get it. She's very shallow. All her essays have been about k-pop in one way or another, and she's so in love with and loyal to the genre that she doesn't do any deep thinking about it. Writing about a subject you love is fine, but you have to think beyond your existing assumptions about the topic. I pointed this out to her, and I think that's part of why she's getting so mad this time.
