And I know, folks get snarky about "common core math" - and some of the ways it is being taught/graded is DUMB, but it also reflects a lot of the ways I do math in my head.

I do "easy" calculations by moving stuff around, and then adjust

I have a pleat-math SYSTEM.

I was an Air force brat in my child and teen years. So I would be 'caught up' in one area' behind' in another... and a lot of assumptions were made about me one way or the other. One guidance counselor/Admin said "Oh you seem smart, I don't think you'll need Pre-Algebra" . If I could go back in time and tell her that I didn't care she was trying to count beans evenly in her various classes she was fucking me over, I would have.

For when I need to pleat, say, 257 inches of fabric into a 30 inch waist with one inch pleats and a 4 inch flat CF...

Math was not my strong point, but I also did AP Calc, so, balance. I think I have totally forgotten calculus, tbh.

Seriously, a calculator to figure out starting vs ending mileage on a day.......
