It's been a week of reminiscing on children's books! The name Basil brought back a book from waaaaay young Rae, and I had to google to figure out the name. It was a series of books called 'The Great Brain' about a 10year old kid who thought himself quite the genius, and had Tom Sawyer-y level clever solutions to get out of chores and such

There was a side character named Basil!

That's when I learned that Basil for a greek is americanized from Vassilios, which also has been changed to Bill - which was my uncle's name!

...huh

Well, when you immigrate over in the 60's, I guess you figure your boy will have better luck in Metro Detroit as 'Bill' than 'Vassilios'

My mom's family had some relatively recent transplants, but that is relatively recent compared to the folks who came over in the 1600s

But I remember the books about the Great Brain! Bits and pieces about tricking family to make ice cream when other kids were around, forcing mom to offer to share for politeness then taking a cut from the kids

I had a many greats grandmother christened in new york in 1690. That's the earliest Murican' I can track

And coordinating to get measles BEFORE other kids, so when they had their pox party to infect the rest of the family, he was already better and could run around and play and rub in that he's healthy and they're sick

....maybe The Great Brain was a bit of a jerk

One thing that stood out that I remember is that the new kid in town is a greek immigrant named Basil, and he just can't hold his own in a fight and gets bullied. Now back then, of course, the answer is to find a way to fight back because that means the boys will respect you. And Tom (The Great brain) realizes that being Greek, Basil keeps trying to wrestle where the other boys are punching. So he changes the stakes of the fight and evens the odds, and Basil comes out on top and so forth

They were great little chapter books for kids, though definitely dated in some aspects
