I'm making one based on a design from NIH. It will have 2 pockets for fine and course charcoal layers and a total of 8 cross-grained layers of fabric. It will completely cover the nose and mouth breathing areas.

It is not PRETTY.... but.

HA! I think I have solved the charcoal dilema.

I am making a mask for DH's shopping runs etc.

I have activated charcoal from a crafting project. The mask will have 8 cross-grained layers of fabric of different weights, and 2 charcoal layers.

BUT... if I just put the charcoal in a fabric bag it will (naturally) fall to the bottom and not be in front of the mouth and nose.

SO. How do I keep the charcoal in place? AND... how to I make it so I can remove the charcoal to wash the fabric and replace the charcoal when it's depleted as a filter?

Also, why the FUCK do they make needle eyes so DAMN SMALL???

I ask a costume teacher group on FB for some online sources they like for 1890s to help my kids, pointing out that my kids are not the most sophisticated at discerning good & bad sources on pinterest

and like, I mean, I am trying and have tried but that was one of the things I had planned to tackle more in depth in the classroom?
