Exactly, Mr. D. I know it sucks. It sucks when I know some of the students in the hallways don't see me as a person but as a white enemy (hell, some of the parents do, too), and it's not my place to defend my benevolence. But the point is that it's not about the kindness of the individual -- it's about the reluctance of those in power to use that power for any other than those of their own group. When power has historically been in the hands of one group, that group can't be considered heroic when they finally buckle to pressure to do the right thing.
