YES!!!! Shades, that's exactly my thinking!

I mean, I can see that it does help to figure out exactly what kids are doing, but it's just so weirdly decontextualized and recontextualized. And a lot of the factors are selected primarily because they can be counted automatically by computer (like number of words in a sentence) even if the author admits they're not the best measure of development. I can see what he's doing and why, but it makes my brain feel grey.

Sounds like piffle to me.

Well, the argument he's making is that there is no generally accepted way to measure writing, so any studies about how to improve writing are already flawed because they can't be compared with other studies.

True, but HIS study is flawed as well. Measuring what is measurable is fine,but there are UNmeasurable stuff too, and that can be studied but not .... measured.

I know what you mean, too, but such studies can't be generalized across populations, which is a major goal in much research: "what does this study about these participants help me to understand about my students/children/patients/etc.?"

It all moves in cycles anyway. As soon as one style of writing is in, it becomes 'overdone' someone breaks the mold (often by doing something that fell out of fashion a few generations ago) and bam... they're 'revolutionary'...until that becomes the overdone thing
