The screenplay was written by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame. He and Roald Dahl (Chitty’s author) were buddies, Roald swapped with him and wrote the screenplay for “You Only Live Twice”

Child catcher scared me as a kid

Child catcher was just slightly less frightening than Barnaby and the Bogiemen from March of the Wooden Soldiers.

Side note: Barnaby and the Bogiemen is the name of my post-punk band.
