It can be hard to balance. Frankly I don't think I've ever made a starting character with less than an Arete 3. Some STs are like "Why?" and I'm like "Seriously? Because I don't want to take two years to be effective at the very magick I came here to play. Two years is what backstories are for"

Mage requires STs to create good challenges to keep PCs out of godmoding... my mod chat experiences seem to indicate most would rather hobble the PCs than be proactive
