She grins at that, and swallows her bite of food. "So, here's the story, you got the short of it, and here's the long." Her voice falls into a sort of cadence as she starts to tell the tale. "There's a bit of back story needed, even less pleasant than the first, but it's required to make sense."

"Everychick knows about the war of rage. Or they should, in any case. The wolves would have it forgotten, but everyone DOES know that history forgotten will be repeated. About how the earthmother and great spirits brought forth all sorts of magnificent creatures, and the shifters to watch over them all. Everyone knows that werewolves are her fighters, but not all know about the others. The bears that heal, the cats that learn, and the coyotes that laugh, the reptiles that remember. Fewer still know about the bats that carry messages, the boars that cleans, the bulls that match and grow new life. There is a reason for that. In the early days, early days, when fairies were flickers of imagination from apes that had newly learnt to dream... some say the cause was that the Wolves became proud, and sought to rule over all other animals. They demanded that all secrets be revealed, and all must submit. Others think it was arguments over how to handle the humans who were growing and changing. That didn't go over so well, and there was a war. The wolves were mighty and filled with rage, and decimated the others, some so badly that they were no more. Sure, there was regret later, but you try telling that to the totems of shifters that no longer walk the earth. It took many generations for them to even listen to calls from the wolves, you know."
