August sits in the Seer's chambers, gazing upwards. It's past bedtime, but he had trouble sleeping even on his study's cot. There's circles under his eyes, and a very light dusting of stubble on the normally well-groomed chin.
Sir Almandine is safely tucked into bed, having left instructions for August to see himself out when ready.
You're still there. He thinks. Alive, which..... if that star flickers or goes out, I don't know what I'll do. Go mad, maybe. That seems likely.
Is it just taking longer than you thought? Have you lost track of time? It's easy to do, there; I know time works differently in the Dreaming.
I don't know why you went, or what you were looking for. I wish I did. It would help; I could distract myself with imagining what might present itself as a challenge, cause you to miss my birthday and more than a week since.
I want to come get you, so badly. What if you're not ok? What if something is holding you there, some fell beast or creature that you can't escape? What if you're hurt and unable to move, or bound by some magic? Vince would die rather than let harm come to you, and his star is constant as well....
Are you late because you enjoy being with him? He sighs and rests his cheek on his knees, drawn up to his chest. You wanted a few days to devote to him. I tried to give you that time but you were mad at me. He must be better than I am, I know. I've tried, but... he has more experience than I do. Between sex as a distraction and the way time moves there... Is that it? Are you with him, instead of me?
I don't mind going without. I like Leonora, and she's become a good friend; I suppose I can see what you've said, about intimacy used to create those closer bonds... but it's not like it is with you. -That- is what I miss; what I crave. I thought you felt the same way....
I know you love me, but... like you said. Maybe it's become more about the logical blending of resources and background instead of passion. I've tried to give you that but... who was I kidding? I could never really compete with a Fiona lover, or even someone more experienced. Stupid to try.
He glances back up with a scowl. Don't you know? Nothing you could bring me from the Dreaming would make me happier than having you here with me. If you restored all of the Truthbranch holdings and opened the gates to Arcadia, I would only walk through them by your side. Not that I have any idea of why you left, what you could think was so important that you couldn't tell me....
Do you not trust me? His already long face grows longer. Is my House finally making its effect known on you? You seemed to be impervious, where others have not been.... did I take it for granted? I can't regret what I am.... I know I've sacrificed for it before, and would again, but I thought you understood.... on the other hand, I can't blame you. He now looks thoroughly dejected. If ever there was a time I would regret....
Coradel. He gazes back up at the gently twinkling star. Please come home. Or guide me to you. Either way... I just want to be with you. Please.
Closer to dawn than midnight, August rises stiffly, wiping his darkened cheeks with his shirt sleeves, and makes his way out and to his study.
