Gwen shuts her locker , being prepared for her first few classes.

Let's see... She has Math first thing - who was the monster who decided on 8am Algebra? Chemistry, and then Lunch... followed by History, and then English at the end of the day.

Then, finally, LaCrosse practice! A bit of a gloomy lining on that silver crowd - Kristin as co-coach.

A flicker of voile catches her eye, there's Art heading in. He has a stack of books in his arms, which matches how the 'old' Arty traveled, but his back is straight, and he carries the burden - and himself - with Confidence. Moving straight past a gaggle of giggling sophomores, rather than slinking to the opposite side of the hall.

Algebra... am I EVER going to use that?

THen a look over at Arthur "Hey, Art"

Gwen can hear a little low-pitched chatter from the sophomores as they walk past her. "Was THAT Farty that just went by?"
"Guess someone finally hit puberty." Appreciative whisper, and then the girls move on.

He has balanced the books on a knee as he spins the combination on his lock, finding the right numbers and popping it open. The sidhe is getting the hang of these mortal trivialities. "Dame - .. Gwen. Good morning."

Still, he slips from time to time.

It's true, even to the unenchanted, Art has gone from geeky blah to nerdy Niiiiiice. THere are better looking male sidhe, but there's really no such thing as a bad looking or even average one. He's kind of like the CW network's idea of what 'nerd' looks like now

"Morning, how goes ?" she settles her own backpack

"I am not certain about these books I was told to read." He admits, as he stacks them into his locker.

"What's the problem?" Gwen inquires.

"This one is clearly in danger of defying the Mists." He points to The Once and Future King. "I don't know how no one has discovered it until now.

"And this one?" The Alchemist, "It didn't contain any texts or guidance on alchemy at all."

She fights an amused smile at the idea that no changeling ever has discovered the Once and Future King until now, "I Think the Once and Future King is one of ...Dee's favorites" She almost called her Dame D'Lorean. "I assure you, our.. superiors are advised. I think they consider the.. way it stirs imaginations worth the risk." At the Alchemist she admits "I haven't read that other. Is it possible it has some symbolism, transformation of a person rather than lead to gold?"

"He seeks Alchemy, but it seems to be a philosophical quest. At the end, he envisions that the treasure was where he started..." A shake of his head. His hair is now soft, bouncy waves, not slicked back greasy looking locks. "Uninspired. I would have at least channeled the dust devil from the final scene into a true battle, rather than succumb to it as nature."

"It should have been called, 'The Boy who Found Nothing'" A small smile.

A chuckle, "I think maybe you dismiss the philosophical quest too easily. If knowledge is power, then he gained much by learning the truth, even if it's just his truth. It's up to you to decide what lessons or treasures you get from what you read, but ... just because you were hoping for a metaphorical pearl, doesn't mean you should scoff at the proverbial piece of amber you find instead. That make sense?"

"It clearly would not be a pearl - it's set in Egypt, far from coastal waters." A chuckle. "Did YOU do your summer reading?"

Wooosh, right over that pretty head. "Yes I did. My point was, somethings have worth even when you stumble upon them when you weren't seeking them"

He considers this, and frowns a bit. "And some things are thrust upon you, when what you sought was stolen away." The books are carefully secured in the locker, and he closes it. "I have class to get to. 'Calculus'. Apparently he's a level up on her in math!

"I protect those I've invited" it comes out a bit cooler and firmer than she intended, "If that's inconvenienced you, well, perhaps you should savor the treasures you have gotten instead, Art. See you around"

"Hmhp." He closes the locker and marches off... which turns out to be in the same direction as Gwen. Math wing.

A sigh and it looks like they're side by side, long legs carrying her

He looks thoughtful, but either has nothing to share, or decides not to say what's on his mind.

Letting her longer strides carry her past him, until he turns off into the Calculus classroom.

And she goes to Algebra. Gah

Calculus! Fun!

"Geometry means, in the original Greek, the Measurement of the Earth. You'll find it all over your every day life, once you know how to look, or where to see it." Gwen's math teacher says. "From how many slices you get from a pizza, to the best way to angle a brick in construction, all the way up to robotics, astronomy, sculptures, and sports... everything in the world revolves around geometry." The short, frizzy haired lady says, hugging a book to her chest.

Yeah, but this is Algebra.

But she doesn't give lip

She goes on, "Geometry is easy to see. Algebra, on the other hand, is a concept. Now, my students, you're all bright, so I know once we get into it, you'll all catch on... but I ALSO know it's tough to get at first. What are variables and operators? Coefficients and Constants? WHY DO I KEEP ASKING YOU ABOUT X?" She laughs!

She fights the inner snark. The teacher is just trying to teach

"Algebra is used in real life, too. Variables are important for cooking, if you want to scale a recipe down for one person, or up for a crowd. Algebra is used for calculate profit and loss... yes, that means it's used for sports, Tyrone, now please put that fantasy football bracket away."

The kid grumbles, he thought he could get away with it just LOOKING like math.

"Let's talk BATTING AVERAGES! Anyone who's watched a game knows that you determine this by taking the number of hits a player gets and dividing that by the number of times the player has been at bat. Now, you can call that Average (a), and take the number of hits, or H, and divide by the number of at-bats, or B!"

She draws on the board, a = h/b

On the lesson goes, and maybe it even makes a bit of sense!

Some of it does, but Gwen struggles with a lot of it. She was never a fan of regular math but got by all right. Now it feels like everything she learned in regular math is damn useless. She feels cheated a bit... and the snark does pop up now and then. If the average teacher is T, and the number of times they actually makes sense is S...

But she'll try

At least the teacher tries, and she lets them know by the end of the hour, "Please feel free to come by during my study hall hours if you need extra help."

Meanwhile, Katrina got to play with PROTRACTORS!

She sighs and resolves to d othat. she's GOT to keep her grades up to meet Lacrosse requirements

She LIKES trig, even if it's not cool to admit it.

"Miss Smyth? I appreciate your enthusiasm, but if you break the protractors, we don't get any more. I bought that batch myself." The teacher says as the rest of the class files out, not calling her out in front of the other students. "So let's keep the swing arms attached to the points, okay?"

"Oh. *&%&... Sorry!"

He grins. "No worries. You know, you can make one yourself with a pencil and bit of string if you're really hard up? I tried that as a fun example once, but, eh. kids didn't really care. I DO have extras." The teacher moves on, collecting worksheets.

"Like a drawing compass, sure..."

"But I won't break it. Promise. Sorry."

"Right!" Someone, mutters, teacher's pet As he walks by - but he's around the corner by the time she turns.
