ONCE THEY GET TO SAN DIEGO...

Brekke has been scanning graffiti when possible to see if there's anything that might read Cal-bel.

The van they were given by Diego is a sturdy thing, and more importantly, rather nondescript. It's the sort of vehicle you overlook

Brekke murmurs, "Cal-bel...cal-bel..." a pause "...backwards, it would be LeBlac?" Throwing ideas into the wind.

Frank has navigated them through the San Ysidro Border Crossing and takes the I-5 north through Chula Vista to San Diego.

"Could be, maybe. Most things have changed since I was here last; is there a recent map in this thing?"

Brekke frowns and digs through the glove compartment. If that fails, she turns and scans the rest of the van.

She finds a map... a bit improperly folded

"Here," she says, pulling the wrinkled thing from the glove compartment and unfolding it. She takes a minute to get her bearings. "Yes, right, I see where we are right now. But perhaps we should pause so you can look at this as well."

She scans it to see if there are any likely landmarks that might be a good place to start hunting for freeholds.

"MMm." Frank nods. "There a truckstop coming up in a few miles. Just for the sake of having done it, look at the map index. See if there's a Cal-bel or something similar."

"Good idea." She does so.

Mmm nothing saying that in so many words, but California and Bella (As in Beauty) does come up as place names here and there

"Hm." She finds a pen and starts circling the incidents of those words.

She also , as she gazes, sees a glimmer of ... Diego's (the satyr) writing. If they read Spanish. It's chimerical notes

"Oh! Notes here, chimerical...but in Spanish." She glances over at him. "I cannot read it."

Frank gets off the Five and takes some surface streets; the truck stop sign is tall and visible nearby. "I'll take a look when we stop but no promises. Mm. Is there an English-Spanish dictionary in here?"

Alas, no.

"I think I would be surprised, but..." she begins the search, coming up empty handed.

Then she sighs. "There is the infernal contraption." She fishes her cell phone out.

As they meander...

Frank notices a boggan on the side of the street. THe fellow is wearing a Tie Dye shirt that says 'Give me a Happy Ending' in bold print over the swirls. While boggans are helpful, they also gossip, so they might get assistance but at a risk

"Mm." Frank indicates the boggan to Brekke with a tilt of his head as he pulls over.
