She stumbles back further. "Sorry."

The rotting wood erupts with maggots, and being chimerical ones, they seem content not just with the substance of the dead or dying, but rather wriggle their way trying to go around Frank to reach Dagmar! it is.. gross.

"Gross..." She stomps at the wriggly things.

they splat, but others clamber onto her, trying to get to her flesh

Frank stomps twice with his feet and claps one with his hands, setting up "We will rock you" rhythms and then does jazz hands to create fire, stopping the maggots.

And Frank realizes there is nothing natural about these Chimera. They are flesh eaters. More akin to rotgrubs of gaming legend than typical maggots

She swipes at the ones climbing her boots and legs, backing up further.

And when the flames burst forth, the maggots shrivel, and turn into an acrid smelling smoke...dried and burned away, but a voice on the smoke whispers "You should embrace the gray, Day Maiden. I will not let you live to see your mission through.."

and all is quiet again, a faint stench, but the dark glamour used to twist the fall out from the tree is gone.

She's breathing heavily, staring - not bolting, but bowstring taut, ready to fly.

Frank narrows his eyes. "What... the ... hell...."

"I'm sorry. I didn't... I didn't mean to break it..."

"Please, Dagmar, that's the least of our concerns. Can you come with me now? To the Lodge?"

She nods, eyes darting between the ashes and the shattered wood....

The ashes are cold, the wood is just wood.

"Come on, then." Frank tucks her in front of him and they move smartly to the Lodge.... unless...?

She allows it, not fighting.

And into the Lodge they go.

And so they arrive at the Lodge....
