I almost got challenged to a duel yesterday - finally watched Wicked and told my musical obsessed friend it would have been better as a movie without the songs 😆

What ever happened to the great Voltaire?! I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Well, I won't argue that several of the songs are absolute bangers. But in the context of the movie where they were able to provide plentiful exposition outside of the songs (as opposed to live theatre) many of them were tedious and extraneous and I found myself fast forwarding

Sentimental Man, One Short Day. Dear Old Shiz - they didn't really add anything vital other than perhaps showing off vocal chops

I would say the same for Dancing through Life (if taken in a vacuum), but the choreography was FANTASTIC, the library tornado wheel was a delight and I really enjoyed it.

I can see why one might think they were redundant in their purpose on some levels, but I think I would see it not so much as redundant as more comprehensive. I Hope I'm using that right. See, you might convince me SOME of the songs could have been cut for the movie but even things like One Short Day help speed the story rather than slow it down for me because I don't want every darn shop or tourist trap in Oz getting too much time where a song sums it up for my brain. Like musical shorthand I suppose . But that's just me.

But I do agree with your voltaire quote!

Also I am biased in that I heard the music first before I saw the live musical OR the movie , so my opinions could be shaped by the 'Change is bad!' primate tendency 🙂

This was my first exposure to most of the songs besides the major ones, soooo :woman-shrugging:
