Ok, so.... Thing1 and I have been working hard on his (MINIMAL) resume. HS Grad, no extracurriculars or honors, no work experience, Eagle Scout (NOT NOTHING!), and VA Volunteer. He's applying to entry level drudge work; F&B, Service, Retail, etc.
He applied to Portillos with the most recent updated resume. Good.
I printed out 10 of 'em and told him to carry them in the car and seize the day while he's out and about. YES most places these days require an online application but at this point what does he have to lose? He's 6 months post-HS grad and needs to get in gear.
We went out to get the week's groceries and stopped at Wendy's to get a small nibble before hitting the food-store.
While waiting for our food, I saw someone asked into the back by someone who was obviously the manager or shift lead; probably the former. It looked like "Come on back and we'll talk about your application...." so I asked the counter server if they were accepting resumes. She went back, came back, asked about availability. I said "Open."
She went back, came back, and said yes, they were taking resumes. So I sent Thing1 out to the car to get those resumes and bring one in to hand in.
He was nonplussed but did it. Handed it in as instructed. The manager-type came out and asked if he'd completed the online app and told him to do it ASAP but did she have his phone number....? Yes, on the resume..... "Ok, good, I'll call you tonight."
Thing1 thinks I set him up but I swear, it was all just....being prepared.
