I've done dowsing for water. It's an uncanny feeling.

Yup. Two copper dowsing rods, held loosely. You approach bit of land that has water running under it, and the rods swing to cross over each other. Absolutely not controlled by the hands.

I haven't had the same luck with stick-dowsing, but it's not entirely different.
