So, today's lesson is: I'm glad I have a union, because otherwise I would have gotten myself fired today.

Yesterday, the department AP informed me they were taking my high-level classes away from me (for no good reason) and reassigning me to freshmen classes (against my will). Today, the same AP came into my classroom to "check in" -- and I absolutely tore her a new one. I don't think I've gotten that angry and loud in a LONG time.

No, fortunately. I checked later with my union rep, who had already heard about it from same AP, and who says it's not going to turn into anything discipline related.

I would have quit today if I could afford to.

Making it all the way to retirement age (five more years) is going to be DIFFICULT.

Can you appeal the change?

Nope. There's no grounds for appeal. It used to be that, since I have seniority, I would get preference of class assignment. However, we lost that several years ago during grievance proceedings. So...I've got nothing.

I'm thinking I might apply to be an adjunct instructor at the college, part-time, but I don't know how well I could balance that with working full-time at the high school.

I doubt Freshmen will be easier but.. will you have more time than you would with upperclassmen or less?

It's possible, but while their writing assignments will be shorter, the quantity of grammar errors that will need correction will be legion.

What concerns me is that I don't handle personal insults well...and that's the primary language of freshmen.

And I take it the parents will ignore you if you bring up such behavior to them about their little angels?

Oh, their children are angels, of course. I've been in those meetings. "Your child called me a 'fatass' in the middle of class." "Oh, that isn't possible! How dare you make such an accusation."

Usually admin is supportive and trusts what we report, but that doesn't mean the parents believe it.
