Nevermind that Birdates are a gold mine to identity theft and scammers and companies are often terrible about protecting them. It's not necessary they know it. they got flack for the gender request apparently (which is why they put in the third option) but it's so we can get a better commerical experience (Prices going up and there's a commercial version)

It's a litigation protection. You can give a fake birthday. But they need to be able to prove that they have safeguards in place to keep children from signing up for accounts. If it turns out a kid gave a fake birthday, then that's the kid's fault -- Disney asked them for the info, so Disney's off the hook.

They've already got methods for that.
