I admit, the only folks I've ever met who hated Gypsies and used it as a slur were Europeans.

At least it;s likely that this name isn't originally intended as hurtful:

"The moths likely got their name because as larvae they have hair with small air pockets that act like balloons allowing them to float for miles, wandering like the group of people they were named after"

But they ALSO tend to come as a plague (the caterpillars) some years and strip the greenery to the stem, so it can be taken as offensive that way too
