One of my children went to Wendy (my costume shop mgr) to ask for "papers" for my class

The class is FULLY REMOTE

the syllabus is online.

the lecture videos are online.

the powerpoints are online.

The book is not online, it is copyrighted.

So somebody doesn't have a clear concept of "yes, you have to buy the book"

and honestly... if she had joined the class discord? The kids have been passing around a pdf.

I pretend not to notice their piracy of a $150 book.

But she's also the one who likes to log out 15 minutes into class and thinks I don't notice

and when I sent an academic alert about her attendance issues, she sent my one hell of an email in response

"Hello Proffessor Garlick,
   It was brought to my attention that a red flag was raised about my attendance in your classes.Although I missed a couple classes, currently I am fine academically thank you for inquiring."

Have you told her that you've noticed her leaving class?

She is hard to pin down one on one

I did clarify in the past two classes that leaving class early means you don't earn full participation points.

Since the syllabus requires "active participation" to get the point

with specific examples - unmuting to ask a question/add a comment, or doing so in the chat box.

It does NOT require a camera on at any point.

I wonder how she'd react if you sent something like "Well on so and so date, you were on for fifteen minues, left class early, and missed the pop quiz"

but that's probably cruel of me, and she'd soon verify there was no pop quiz 😉

Alternately, you could start giving pop quizzes for credit whenever you notice she's left the class.

probably 1/4 of my kids are in class on their phones, because their wifi access is dodgy or they don't own a personal computer
