Ever Read Phule's Company by Robert Aspirin?

I've heard the title, but never read it.

1990 book, shows it's age (Uses Oriental instead of Asian at one point, etc, but just a quirk of it's publishing date really) but is hilarious.

Oh, yeah, the Donald Westlake stuff is like that. Really offensive now, but darn good capers.

Sci Fiction ... a rich guy is promoted to Captain to get him out of the way to an Omega squad, the worst of the worst. Our hero is a good guy, and uses more than his money to make them confident again.

And part of the story is they end up not just in contest against the 'Space army' (Different from the legion) but their ELITE force...

Well, Phule's company are the under dogs and get humiliated in the first part of the contest...close quarter drill.

which the Red Eagle (army elite guys) use to show them up by doing stuff in blindfolds etc. Really rubbing it in

Hmm...sounds kind of like the early stages of Stripes, at least in tone if not in detail.

Then the next contest comes .. Confidence/Obstacle Course... The Red Eagles are confident that they can win this too. 20 of them make decent time..full pack, combat conditions , blah blah. They don't really respect their rivals

And then Phule's company goes in... and not only do they show good team work, the whole squad gets through by BLOWING THE SHIT out of the obstacles... full combat conditions after all 😉

They use their weapons, while the army guys are like "Holy #$#$"
