That's sort of what this house I'm in was back in the day. It was built in the 1910's, had a shed in the part of the property that later got subdivided off, and I think the little cubby spaces accessible from outside used to be used as root cellars, I guess.

Also has an old access for coal delivery.

So...I guess with a pit like that, you drop a bucket down to scoop up coal as needed?

Ours has a little closet space in the basement that the coal would pile up in, and you'd stick in a shovel through a door near the bottom.

When she was doing some repairs this decade the contractors discovered the beast was still hooked to an active gas line. whoops.

And that, of course, wakes me up enough to be aware of a certain pressing need, so eventually I get up to deal with that and she joins me just for the company. And then I go back to bed but with less than 2 hours before the alarm and when that goes off she comes to shower with me to hunt the gurgle monster, and......
