I get that, but at the same time....the 3/5s compromise is still an ugly chapter of our history, and it hurts to feel like we have to settle for something similarly unjust.

I think that we are facing a schism between a side that thinks people have a right to access health care, even if they are poor or sick, and a side that thinks ruthless, unregulated capitalism is fiiiiine. People might die, but imagine the dividends!

I'm not saying she's lying... but while she might PREFER private health isurance remain an option, that doesn't mean that if the options up to vote is either A) SAME FUCKED UP SYSTEM or B ) Scrap old system entirely and put up Universal Health Care, she won't go B. SHe can easily say she would have preferred C, but B was the moral option of the two up for the vote.

We have a bunch of people who grew up being told that being poor is a moral failure, and that good healthcare is a privilege not everybody can afford -- therefore, healthcare equals moral endorsement. These are people who need to believe that SOMEBODY is worse, morally, than they are, so they need to see somebody unable to get good healthcare. Then they have somebody to pity while simultaneously saying "There but for the grace of God go I"....and then wipe their hands of it.
