And every single extant 14th c garment with buttons, and every piece of artwork you can see buttonholes, they are horizontal

(We have not extant lady cotehardies, and also, cotehardie is a misnomer, it was only ever used for male garments)

though really, cotehardie, kirtle, cote, surcote, gown.... it's like pants & slacks & trousers.

I tend to just give up and refer to skin layer, versatile layer, and fashion layer.

Maybe she thinks they'll make a more elegant line if vertical. Which they won't if they're tugging out of shape.
