it is how he came from persia to england, going through various owners, but he has the mute horse boy who takes care of him

and it is mostly told through the boy's perspective

I read this, like, 25 years ago and haven't since, and it's still pretty vivid

That's definitely bringing back memories, albeit vague ones.
