On a historic hand embroidery group - which, presumably, has a lot of people who are interested in embroidery - a person had some questions about framing out a blackwork project

There was then a comment from OP that she was lusting after a slate frame.

I linked to the place I got mine - local artisan, handcrafted, fellow SCAdian - and said, hey, he has reasonably priced slate frames

understand, most commercially available slate frames in the lace-and-stretch style are, at minimum, $100-$180 for an 18x18 frame.

Egill's are 50, his are a little heavier in weight and don't have built in webbing.... but are $50 bucks and solid and functional. Also, often exotic wood (mine is purpleheart).

I sincerely doubt she makes slate frames. She might make non-adjustable frames, or scroll frames, which are not the same thing

Presumably, in a HISTORIC HAND EMBROIDERY GROUP, op might want to have a quality piece for several projects?

I don't know a ton about woodworking - but I know that the hole in the spreader bars JUST fits the stretcher bars with very, very little wiggle room so nothing rattles.

This isn't a crap-it-out-in-15-minutes thing.

Also, historic embroidery, where most of these ladies are using silk. Trust me, you spend more than 50 bucks on thread for a decent-sized project.

I'm not familiar with her. Mistress Briony of Chatham is a laurel and was head of Athena's Thimble for a long time.
