I've never had my own rats. Had mice. Have known ratties, though. The boys are so chill.

I'm not crazy about rodents. They smell

Female rats aren't bad at all. We litter trained ours and clean the cage completely every 2 weeks, with fleece floors rather than stinky chips

you have to keep up with them, or they stink to high heaven

Male rats can be stinky, though, and I'd never want a ferret

Oriental shorthairs are neat - they grow into their ears a bit more
