See, nihilistic porn is what I would call stuff like the Saw franchise, where somebody is consciously forcing people into these awful decisions...and the most recent season definitely has parts that have gone that way. But mostly it's "what do you do when you face a threat that isn't easily defeated by our modern conveniences, and how to you manage when those conveniences are taken away and the threat is still there?"
