I remember one of the scariest moments in my life. I was a teenager, it was late because I was walking home from a D&D game. The air was crisp and on the cool side but not so cold that I had to have my jacket fully closed. So I walked behind the row of houses rather than the street to save time. As the moon tinged with an unhealthy yellow, I found myself walking along a small drainage area nothing huge , a man made trench of shallow proportions and yet it did provide even more shadows in the already dim night. I stepped on it only once...and then I heard it, a tick tick tick sound like something's nails hitting the stonework.

It wasn't fast at first, but it was un nerving, I looked to the side and a bit behind I stopped. It was silent again but the shadows had taken on a new menace . I moved again, and that sound of something ominously rhythmic began again...tick tick tick. I picked up my pace. Tick Tick Tick...faster as if keeping pace.

Home was not yet in sight, but the hill it was up on , that I thought I saw, this is silly I thought, and turned and...nothing, and all still. Just a glaring moon and shadows that seemed to be hunched in attendance.

Another slow turn and leave and... tick tick tick

Oh hell to the no. There were no witnesses, and I decided dignity could be left behind as I chose survival! I began to race up the hill... tick tick tickity tick..and then I stopped out of breath, TICK! seemed very loud.

I looked down. My jacket buttons , made of metal, had been the source of the sound and clicking the whole time. 🙂
