Well, a fairly productive morning, as I measure such things. Got a good amount of reading done for my rhetoric class, but still not sure I'll have everything that's assigned for the first class read before tomorrow. 80 pages of Plato coming up...yikes.

Yikes indeed. Somewhere there is the concept of perfect brevity, and Plato apparently missed it 🙂

Seems like. This is on top of the 80 pages I've already studied....before the first class. This better not be the workload throughout.

Still, interesting stuff, on-and-off. Seeing the roots of Western philosophy and education.

Well, the power of Rhetoric is something that's very timely with pundits and politics being what they are

Yup. A lot of what I'm reading so far, though, is justification of why people should study rhetoric...not the actual teachings of the art itself.

And why you might want to recognize when it's being used on you (Or at least the crowd you are in)

That's a key part of the discussions so far, yes, but mostly in a "my school's better than your school!" kind of way.

Our Virgins (Cheerleaders) are more lovely , our warriors (Sports Teams) greater, and our sages (teachers) more wise; truly the gods favor us, or they would not have cursed your city state (School) with suck

Interesting note, though...apparently Socrates didn't invent what's called the "Socratic method" of teaching. According to many scholars, it was taught to him by a courtesan of Pericles, named Aspasias, who was quite the scandalous figure for inviting both men and women into her home for scholarly conversation. None of her writings, however, have survived (or at least haven't been discovered yet).

Who knows, maybe telling the young folk that they're reaching above their gender and class/station, at least historically speaking, will get their rebellious aspects more interested in shutting a bunch of dead rich guys up 🙂

chuckle Possibly. I tend to find that these kids catch on to those tricks pretty quick and dig in their heels against their best interests. But there's some good stuff in here that I may put on the walls. You know, motivational shit. wry

Fair enough. Play it straight and let them decide what fuel they want to use as long as they get their wheels going forward?

That IS the trick...putting the wheels in motion. Whole lot easier to make a course correction if your brakes haven't rusted in place.

I leave it to those noble practitioners of the art of education such as yourself. I myself would not have the patience, and suspect by my 10th class might be yelling "Strain yourselves a little and think you knobs!"

smirk You think I don't? I try to resist resorting to sarcasm (especially since it goes over the heads of some of them), but it's such a satisfactory tool to use.

For what it's worth, I think you might be a really good teacher...but I wouldn't recommend entering the field at this time.

Thank you, no. Not to get into politics, but there are reasons on a national, state, and local level to avoid that even if I could.
