Even King Arthur gets tired of it... Lance begs Arthur for evil to fight, what battle of justice will they do? And Arthur explains that at this particular time they've gone a maying... knights picking flowers, that sort of thing. Lancelot is like snobishly "Knights... picking flowers???" And Arthur finally says "Well Somebody has got to do it!"

And of course, you feel sorry for him too.

I think when Lance is honestly played in most versions, he honestly, truly, believes he's just being honest.
