I've played it both ways, is all. It burns, but Jer has reached into Desolation's Fire in the past.

Tweak has, too, but before she was Freeholder...she treated it like it was a low-level electrical current, creating a buzzing, numbing sensation in her fingers, but not real damage.

Perhaps if touching it longer...?

In the corner near the bale fire stands a three-foot tall granite statue of a a female Troll, known to the occupants to be “Brekke”, often accompanied by small items of tribute. Cackleing!!

Oh. Mmm I also had a character look straight up FROM the fire and saw a giant spider soaking in the glamour, and it was listed as a Chimera
