I was totally shy all through school. Then I got a retail job, and had to walk through Union City home from BART around 1am nightly, a gang area. My ex-bf lived in Oakland. I now live in Vallejo, just behind crime-riddled Oakland, and work in a building that literally has bullet holes in it.

I think you get used to it.

Our techs regularly pay $24 to park, because there is none.

And driving there can be a pain during weekends and during commute. BUT, yes, there are things to do. If you come in summer, dress warmly.

It's a running joke about how tourists come from other places in shorts and flip-flops, and end up paying 3x as much as they should for a sweatshirt from the vendors near the wharf. 🙂

And you might get sneezed on by the sea lions, be ready to duck pinniped snot.
