a LOT of houses have a side door entrance that leads straight to the basement stairs

the basement has a potty and maybe a shower, but somehow, pittsburgh potties are always just THERE, next to, say, the boiler, no little cubby around it

Kind of cool. You know, if I, as a typical Californian, went to buy a house there, you'd hear me calling baffled from below. "Why is there a toilet in the middle of nowhere?"
