As the rental van crests a gentle hill, the view ahead opens to reveal the sprawling event grounds of the Gathering. The main entrance is marked by a large wooden arch, carved with intricate designs of animals, plants, and symbols representing the local tribes. Streamers of brightly colored fabric flutter in the breeze, suspended from the arch and trailing down onto nearby poles. A hand-painted sign near the entrance reads, "Welcome to the Gathering: Celebrating Our Stories and Traditions." "Welcome" is repeated in several different languages, at least one of which Gwen recognizes as Cherokee.

The scent of wood smoke and roasted food drifts on the wind, growing stronger as they approach. Beyond the arch, the grounds are bustling with activity. Rows of vendor stalls line the main path, their colorful canopies forming a patchwork of shade. Each booth is a unique display: beadwork, pottery, carved stone, woven baskets, and other handmade goods glint in the sunlight. Some vendors sit on blankets rather than behind tables, casually chatting with curious visitors while showcasing their wares.

To one side of the grounds, a small circle of white tents serves as an exhibit area for local tribal history. Inside, panels of text and photographs tell stories of resilience, cultural survival, and innovation, alongside artifacts like tools, clothing, and ceremonial items. Elders sit nearby, prepared to share anecdotes and answer questions with warm smiles.

In the center of the grounds, a large open circle of packed dirt serves as the heart of the Gathering. Groups of dancers are preparing for a performance, some already clad in traditional regalia adorned with feathers, beads, and jingling bells. The rich hues of their outfits shimmer in the light as they make final adjustments. A drum circle nearby resonates with a low, steady rhythm, accompanied by singing - even though they are just warming up, it already seems to harmonize with the rustling leaves and bird calls in the trees beyond.

Children dart through the crowds, laughing and chasing each other with boundless energy, their faces painted with simple designs. Families and friends gather in small clusters, some sharing food, others pausing to admire a performance or examine an artisan's handiwork. The atmosphere is vibrant and inviting, filled with the hum of conversations, bursts of laughter, and the occasional bark of a dog trotting along on a leash - luckily Ivan is not out of place here!

Parking is organized in a grassy field nearby, where volunteers in reflective vests direct cars into neat rows. The ground crunches softly underfoot as people step out of their vehicles and stretch, their excitement palpable.

Beyond the parking area, a path leads towards the event, flanked by young trees and wildflowers in full bloom.
This is no mere festival. It’s a celebration of community, culture, and creativity—a place where the past and present weave together into something alive and welcoming. The Gathering promises an experience filled with stories, connections, and inspiration for all who attend.

It takes only a few minutes for them to take this all in as they pull up, and soon the van is parked and the trio is ready to explore - there are Vendors (both food and wares), Storytellers, Cultural Displays, and Performances.
