"Kitten's got balls," Rowan observes. This is their first time at The Barn.

"What's their names?"

"That's Brown Dog, and that's.. uh.. Oski."

"Hey, kids," Rowan says to the critters, giving a slight wave.

"Brown Dog and Odin.. Oski... were both rescues, found when we were helping clean up after a big storm."

"Damn. Lucky you found them, especially that little one."

"Two Bit, too. She's off bossin' CJ I think."

"Two Bit is a...?"

"Terrier."

"Ah. So Two Bit is in charge." A smirk.

"Yup."

The little dog looks up and bounds to see what's what!

"Oh...yup...terrier..." as Two Bit gets officiously underfoot.

A soft laugh, genuine enough - not something Rowan's heard much.

"I'm kind of a sucker for sad-sack animal stories. I'm not allowed to bring any more pets home."

"I mean, the horse situation aside." Rueful.

"Right, one of those is yours, right? Or...two?"

Two Bit sniffs, and deciding all is fine, approaches Rowan and appraises them. More curious than alarmed

She wavers her hand. "Star is mine. Lady O and Bucky are really for the Lodge."

"But Star has a whole sad sack story, too." A wry smile.

"Really going for the whole in-the-arms-of-the-angels vibe with the four-footers."

"I hate those commercials, oh god."

"Yeah. Can't watch anything late at night without getting hit with the pathos." They look around the room. "Nice."

"Nice?"

A shrug. "Yeah. Nice place."

"Oh! Yeah, it really is."

"We've put work into it, over the years."

"You managed to land the whole nuclear family scene, too. Doesn't happen for a lot of us folk."

"Lot of it around this area, though. Weird. Not bad, just...weird."

"Yeah. I was really lucky. The whole thing.. it.. there were issues, when I was a fledge. I needed to get out of my old foster home pretty fast."

A scowl. "They messin' with you?"

A complicated flicker of emotion. "Not them, no."

Hands up. "Sorry, nope, none of my biz."

"I was dragging up trouble - magic trouble. I wasn't safe with the Browns. I needed to be somewhere with the fae. The Browns were good people."

"Right, see...that's what I mean. We're not exactly fit to stay with the original family unit, but you eventually landed a pretty sweet deal. Your folks are solid."

"Yeah. They're great. Hard to believe I lucked out so hard."

"That might be why I get so... protective... about Rivervale. It saved me, when I wasn't exactly someone easy. Still not that easy."

"Nothin' wrong with being complicated."

"Nope."

"So...they took in a stray, and you take in strays. And so on, and so on."

She laughs. "Yeah, not wrong."

"I'm not as good with two-legged strays, though. That'd be Kerri or Anne-Marie who can be more welcoming."

"Huh, yeah, they've got the come-on-in vibe. Your mom, too."

"Mom too." A fond smile.

"Speaking of...what the heck is she making? Smells damn good and halfway to awesome."

"Stuffed pork chops. Hope you like spice."
