Snort-laugh.

“You know, maybe I’ll give her a call. I mean, she probably misses me.”

In a diffident tone.

"Yeah, you'd be doing her a favor." Gentle nudge and a soft smile.

He leans back against her and dials. Soon he's holding the phone 3’ away from his head with a wince as a voice squeals in delight over the line. A careful pause, then softly,

“I miss you too, mom.”
